Transition of Support of MSU LON-CAPA Instance

The MSU instance of the LON-CAPA course management system was switched to a new support arrangement during the summer of 2010. Going forward, the LON-CAPA service will be supported by Gerd Kortemeyer, associate professor in the Lyman Briggs College and one of the creators of LON-CAPA, and his team and the infrastructure hosted by the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

As MSU’s options for its large-scale, general-purpose course management environment evolve we have a need to focus central support resources in new ways while continuing to make LON-CAPA available for use at MSU.  LCT appreciates and thanks Professor Kortemeyer and the Department of Physics and Astronomy for stepping up to support LON-CAPA at MSU, and we collectively believe that this will position LON-CAPA better for direct engagement in the scholarship of teaching and learning, continued development and innovation, and associated external funding opportunities, while providing a sound basis for its general use at MSU.

Teaching and Learning Environment (TLE) Funding Information

The "Teaching and Learning Environment" funds originated in FY1994-95 as a special line of funding in MSU's annual appropriation from the State of Michigan; the funding later became a part of MSU's base appropriation, but is still administered in accordance with the original intentions and design for the funding.

The TLE funding cycle is annual. Beginning with the budget cycle in the 2007-08 Fiscal Year (budgeting for FY 2008-09), changes were made to the form of TLE requests and allocations. Requests are made from the level of colleges (deans) and academic support units (directors).

Points of information regarding TLE funding are provided in:

  • A current "TLE Accounts Primer": TLE Accounts Primer, 7 July 2009 (PDF)
  • A memo describing TLE process changes implemented in the FY 2007-08 budgeting cycle (please note that this memo is provided for historical background purposes only; the actual process descriptions contained in it may and have changed since its release; always refer to current instructions circulated for each year's funding cycle for accurate TLE instructions): TLE process change memo
